Barbara Kilarski guides the chicken enthusiast through raising and cultivating chickens in small spaces. Providing advice on everything from choosing breeds to gathering eggs to complying with city ordinances, the book is interspersed with smart tidbits about the joys of raising chickens in the city and illustrated with vintage chicken advertisements. As Kilarski notes, "Keeping a small flock of chickens, even two chickens, is an enjoyable and rewarding pastime that, incidentally, makes us a little more self-sufficient and brings us closer to the slow, measured beat of nature. |

Approximately six billion "broiler" chickens are produced and sold each year by the factory farmer to sources like supermarkets and fast food chicken restaurants. As many as 60% of supermarket chickens are infected with Salmonella enteritis. Another pathogen that can be spread from chickens to humans is Campylobacter, which can cause infection, illness or death. |

Most people are not aware that you can actually die from eating chicken that's infected with different types of viruses or bacteria. I know two people who have died from eating chicken.
Mike: You're kidding! Two people who have died from chicken?
Wolfe: It was a good friend of mine in New York. Her son died from eating chicken.
Mike: Was it salmonella?
Wolfe: It was a salmonella, E.coli situation. That whole experience really impressed in my mind that the food supply is actually dangerous.
Mike: This makes the case for vegetarianism or veganism. |

Toussaint had already isolated a bacterium (now called Pasteurella multocida) in the fluids of chickens with chicken cholera but could not culture the organism. Pasteur found a way to culture the organism and, on feeding chickens a single drop of it, induced cholera.
In the summer of 1879, Pasteur and his assistants went on vacation, leaving a batch of chicken cholera culture in the laboratory refrigerator. Upon his return several months later, Pasteur inoculated healthy chickens with the aged culture. To his surprise, the aged culture did not produce disease in the chickens. |

It kind of reminds me of dipping chicken McNuggets into that sweet and sour sauce at McDonald's. I don't know if McDonald's still offers that, since I haven't eaten there in probably 7 or 8 years, but I remember growing up I would eat at McDonald's all the time, and one of my favorite items was, of course, the chicken McNugget items. This new Tofu 2 Go product brings back some of the pleasant memories of chowing down on chicken McNuggets, but of course, without all the detrimental health effects of actually eating fried, pressed chicken parts. |

Often, sick people say, "I'm going to have some chicken soup" because that's supposed to be good for a flu. chicken soup is actually one of the worst things that you can eat when you're sick due to its high sodium content. There is so much salt in a can of chicken soup that it directly acts as an immune system suppressant.
On top of that, chicken soup often has noodles in it, and those noodles are made with refined white flour, which also depletes vitamins and minerals from your body. |

Authorities in the Republic of Korea formally report an epidemic of highly pathogenic avian influenza, caused by the H5N1 strain of the virus, at the chicken farm. This is the first time that highly pathogenic avian influenza has ever been reported in the country. No symptoms are reported in farmers in close contact with the infected chickens.
Dec. 26, 2003 – Authorities in the Republic of Korea report the spread of H5N1 infection to chicken and duck farms in five provinces. Altogether, more than 1.3 million chickens and ducks have died or been destroyed.

Because they completely fail to recognize these crucial facts about vaccines and children's health:
1) Many of the vaccines being administered today are designed to prevent non-lethal infections like chicken Pox. Saving a child from chicken Pox is not a heroic, lifesaving act except in extremely rare cases. (See below...)
2) More importantly, children who experience chicken Pox have stronger immune systems as a result. The immune system needs to be exercised for it to remain strong. |

Prepare meals ahead of time. There is usually more time on the weekend to cook and enjoy meals with family and friends. Get a head start on busy weekday meals by making some meals ahead of time or making double batches of some recipes and freezing them for another day. tion, since it only provides fat and sugar. |

Herpes zoster is actually caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chicken pox. After someone recovers from chicken pox, most of the viral organisms are destroyed, but some survive and lay dormant in certain sensory nerves. A decline in the efficiency of the immune system allows the viruses to reemerge and cause shingles.
Herpes zoster can occur due to stress or because the immune system has been weakened, either by disease, such as lymphoma or Hodgkin's disease, or by treatment with immunosuppressant or anticancer drugs. |
| Completely digesting the average meal, from the time the food enters the body until the waste leaves, can take hours or days depending on the type and quantity of the food (for example, pork is more difficult to digest then chicken, and chicken is more difficult to digest then watermelon). For all practical purposes though, if we are eating two to three meals a day, every day, then we are in a constant state of digestion. That is, every minute of every day our digestive system is working hard at breaking down foods, delivering nutrients, and expelling waste. |

Upon his return several months later, Pasteur inoculated healthy chickens with the aged culture. To his surprise, the aged culture did not produce disease in the chickens. Using a fresh batch of virulent cholera culture, he then inoculated two groups of chickens: a group of previously uninoculated chickens and the original group that had remained unaffected by the aged culture inoculation. |

Bill had cut his own career in science short when he was drafted to run the family business, Church's Fried chicken, the Texan answer to Kentucky Fried chicken. He'd spent 10 years at it and recently he'd taken Church's to the market. He'd made his money and now he was in the mood to return to his youthful aspirations ?but with no education, he'd had to do it by proxy. In Hal he'd found his perfect counterpart ?a gifted physicist willing to pursue areas that ordinary scientists might dismiss out of hand. |

When choosing other meats, such as flank steak, top sirloin, London broil, chicken, and turkey—all of which are great, lean sources of meat?remember to go for organically raised, pastured animals (those that eat grass, not grains) whenever possible. Avoid the fattier cuts of meat such as bacon, beef ribs, chicken and turkey legs, fatty pork chops, fatty pork roasts, lamb chops, leg of lamb, pork ribs, pork sausage, and T-bone steak. Wild game can also be an excellent source of lean proteins without added fats and fillers typically found in farm-raised animals. |

It is a painful skin condition caused by the virus that initially gives you chicken pox. After you recover from chicken pox, the virus remains hidden away in your nerves, dormant (another word for forgotten!) until something triggers your body's response to it. That "remembering" manifests as painful skin lesions when the virus becomes active again. So, even though you overcome your initial illness, the physical or bioenergetic imprint of that breakdown can linger for decades and manifest later in wholly different ways. |

Your grandmother may have believed, as mine did, that chicken soup was the perfect cure for a fever. The way my grandmother's soup tasted, it sure couldn't hurt one way or the other, and it certainly was soothing and comforting. But even though some research has suggested that chicken soup does, indeed, have antiviral properties, it is not a valid first-line treatment for an infection. Giving up on allopathic medicine for any of these unproven alternatives just doesn't make sense.
Some of my patients tell me they feel better after taking supplements. |

I believe it is cruelty at its worst to put a chicken in a cage so small it can barely turn around, and cut off its beak so that it can't kill another chicken or pluck out its own feathers. Cattle feeding practices in the United States right now are also a form of cruelty, since matter such as dead animals and chicken excrement are ground up and fed to cows. This is a standard, USDA-approved feeding practice in the cattle industry, by the way. Click here to search Google and see for yourself. |

He loved chicken nuggets and beer. Other transplant recipients have reported major behavioral changes, only to discover later that they had begun speaking and behaving like their donors. |
