Often, sick people say, "I'm going to have some chicken soup" because that's supposed to be good for a flu. chicken soup is actually one of the worst things that you can eat when you're sick due to its high sodium content. There is so much salt in a can of chicken soup that it directly acts as an immune system suppressant.
On top of that, chicken soup often has noodles in it, and those noodles are made with refined white flour, which also depletes vitamins and minerals from your body. |

And voila—they found that the ingredients in chicken soup stop the movement of white blood cells called neutrophils that get released when you have an infection or cold. (Just for the record—and to bring a smile to your face—the title of the actual published study was chicken soup Inhibits Neutrophil Chemotaxis in Vitro. And no, I'm not making that up.) Neutrophils are the most abundant kind of white blood cell in the body and an important part of the immune system. (They're the predominant cells in pus, and the reason it's white. Your grandmother may have believed, as mine did, that chicken soup was the perfect cure for a fever. The way my grandmother's soup tasted, it sure couldn't hurt one way or the other, and it certainly was soothing and comforting. But even though some research has suggested that chicken soup does, indeed, have antiviral properties, it is not a valid first-line treatment for an infection. Giving up on allopathic medicine for any of these unproven alternatives just doesn't make sense.
Some of my patients tell me they feel better after taking supplements. |

My husband recently had a spell of heavy, nonproductive coughing and couldn't reach his doctor. Robitussin DM didn't do a thing. He went 2 nights with very little sleep and was miserable.
I made him some chicken soup for supper, and after he ate a bowl of it he stopped coughing. During the night he started up again. With more chicken soup, the coughing stopped immediately and he finished the night sleeping well. |

First we visualize what we want, and then we achieve it; because what we visualize, we realize," explains author and motivational speaker Mark Victor Hansen, who used this technique to make chicken soup for the Soul a big hit. "We see it in our mind's eye, and then it happens," adds Hansen, whose vision paid off handsomely, because although 100-plus publishers initially rejected his and cocreator Jack Canfield's project, the book went on to spawn 100-plus other titles and the series has sold more than 100 million copies. So see yourself free and success will be yours!

So one day this esteemed doctor and researcher was making chicken soup for the Jewish holidays with his wife, Barbara. And they started chatting about how good it is for colds.
Pause for a moment for editorial comment.
Years ago, when I was a "blond," I was having my hair bleached one day, and let me tell you, it burned. The hairdresser said, "Hey, let me put some sugar or Sweet'N Low on it; it takes away the burn." My reaction: Huh? Until she put it on. It was like magic. No burn, soothing as aloe vera gel. |

"YOU HAVE HIGH blood sugar." Those are five words you'd really rather not hear from your doctor at your next checkup. Researchers at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach have found that hot chicken soup apparently increases the flow of mucus. Although researchers aren't sure whether it's the aroma or the taste, they say chicken soup helps make your nose run, which shortens the amount of time cold germs spend inside your nose. In a test, hot chicken soup worked better than hot water alone.

Thyme
Coughs frequently are a consequence of colds, and chicken soup is a time-honored cold remedy. Beyond its long history of use for this purpose (the Jewish philosopher Maimonides is said to have recommended it), there is even research to demonstrate its value for relieving congestion from colds.160 So it is little wonder that chicken soup flavored with thyme can be helpful.
